Frequently Asked
Questions

What is ISCL?

ISCL, the Institute for Safety Coaching and Leadership, is a global professional association dedicated to advancing the practice of safety coaching. We support coaches and organizations through community, research, education, and professional credentials.

What is the difference between membership and credentials?

Membership provides you with access to ISCL’s community, events, resources, and professional development opportunities.

Credentials are designations (AfSC, AcSC, PSC, FSC) that recognize your qualifications, skills and experience.

Some members choose community access only, while others also apply for a credential to show professional standing.

Is ISCL a certifying body?

ISCL is a membership-based professional association that currently awards tiered credentials based on qualifications, skills and experience.

What are the different credential levels?
  • Affiliate Safety Coach (AfSC): Entry-level recognition.
  • Accredited Safety Coach (AcSC): Core professional certification.
  • Professional Safety Coach (PSC): Advanced-level credential.
  • Fellow Safety Coach (FSC): Lifetime recognition by nomination.

How long does the credentialing process take?

It depends on the level (and you’ll receive email updates at each step):

  • AfSC: 2 – 3 weeks.

  • AcSC: 4 – 6 weeks.

  • PSC: 6 – 8 weeks.

  • FSC: Up to 8 weeks (post nomination).

What if I'm not approved?

We will discuss options with you, including different credential tiers. We describe these in the Terms and Conditions which is linked to your application.

What happens if I don't renew my credential?

If your credential isn’t renewed by the expiration date, it becomes lapsed, and your credentialed status will no longer be active. You’ll lose the right to use the ISCL credential title and digital badge, and your name will be removed from the public register of credentialed safety coaches.

You have a 60-day grace period after expiration to submit your renewal, with a $75 late fee applicable. During this time, your credential remains lapsed until renewal is approved.

After 60 days, your credential is considered expired, and you’ll need to reapply as a new candidate, meeting all current credentialing requirements.

If you’re stepping back from practice, you can request Retired or Inactive status, which pauses renewal obligations but means you can’t use the credential for professional or marketing purposes.

Do I need to track my Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?

At ISCL, we see professional growth as a natural outcome of being an active member of our community. Through our webinars, events, resources, and volunteering opportunities, you’ll have plenty of ways to learn, connect, and grow.

Because ongoing development is built into the membership experience, we don’t require you to log or submit CPD hours formally. By qualifying for membership and engaging with ISCL’s community, you’re already demonstrating your commitment to continual learning and professional excellence.

How is my personal data protected?

We follow strict data privacy practices. Credential records are stored securely, and you can choose to opt-in to sharing your details on the public-facing coaches registry.
